About Hamburg and its gay life

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg – Germany's ›Gateway to the World‹ – is the second largest city in Germany after Berlin, and also an independent express. It is located about km southeast of the North Sea along the river Elbe and has the largest seaport in Germany. Because of the port, the pent-up river Alster and the numerous canals and smaller rivers Hamburg is one of the cities in Europe with the most bridges.

The settlement history of Hamburg began with the Saxons in the 4th century BC. In the 9th century a castle named Hammaburg was built in this place, from which the name Hamburg derived. In the 12th century the settlement was given the port law (Hafenrecht) and special trade privileges which allowed Hamburg to progress into a flourishing commercial center during the Middle Ages. Nightlife

Hamburg’s friendly, uncover vibe has made the city a favourite destination for LGBTQIA+ visitors. The local scene is most lively in the quarters St. Georg and St. Pauli where you’ll uncover plenty of gay-friendly locations. Below we've given you a head start with some of our favourite LGBTQIA+ spots in Hamburg.

St. Georg

Located next to Central Station, St. Georg is an excellent place to begin your Hamburg excursion. The quarter’s centre of the action is Lange Reihe, along which you'll locate loud and proud gay bars next to cosy cafés, restaurants and shops flying the rainbow flag. For delectable home-made cakes in a chic interior, stop by Café Gnosa. A couple of doors down, you'll find Cafe Uhrlaub, where you can drop in for German-style breakfasts and hot meals any day of day. Order a gin & tonic in a cosy booth at M&V Bar, or travel for cocktails in the dimly-lit setting of Kyti Voo. Along Danziger Straße, you'll find literature, clothing and erotic paraphernalia at Bruno’s and good company in Bellini Bar.
