Amsterdam's reputation as one of the most gay-friendly cities in Europe is good earned.
History of tolerance to homosexuality in Amsterdam
Relatively liberal attitudes in the first half of the 20th century led to the establishment of the first Dutch gay magazines, Levensrecht and Wij. The outbreak of World War II meant setbacks as Nazi occupation led to the oppression of homosexuality in the Netherlands. Real progress was made from the s on, leading to the formation of many LGBT groups and the release of the Gay Krant magazine. The Netherlands became the first nation in the world to recognise same-sex marriage in , and Amsterdam’s then-mayor Job Cohen performed ceremonies almost immediately.

We love visiting Amsterdam. Whether it's for a urban area break, a romantic weekend, or a gay party, circle we always perceive we're going to possess a terrific time.
Whilst Amsterdam is most famous for its “coffeeshops” where you can smoke joints legally, it is also culturally rich with world-class museums and has the most distinctive urban landscape.
The city is dominated by water, with canals, around bridges, lots of pretty narrow cobblestone streets, and many many many bicycles! It's so picturesque that the network of canals in the 17th-century historic old town (called the “Canal Ring“) was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in
Amsterdam is also super gay, which is unsurprising given that it is the capital city of one of the most gay friendly countries in the world. It is one of the few places where we feel comfortable walking the streets holding hands and don't feel fancy we first have to look over our s

Look with us, not at us
Vrees h

About Amsterdam and its gay life
Amsterdam had been a powerful city of maritime trade fame for many centuries. In the second half of the 20th century it was considered the gay capital of Europe, due to the beauty of the city and due to the city's liberal atmosphere which was far ahead of most other European cities and countries at that period.
As our Amsterdam Gay Maps show, there are several gay areas in Amsterdam, all of them not really far from each other. First of all you got the street with the unpronounceable name, Reguliersdwarsstraat, which is rather mainstream and quite busy at the weekend. Nearby are the Amstel street and Kerkstraat. And finally there are Warmoesstraat and Zeedijk in the very
