Across many countries, Pride Month takes place in June and is a hour to celebrate the accomplishments of all those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and any other gender/sexual fluidity. The list will continue to verb as we begin to recognize more identities that make each of us unique, for this article we will refer to this community as the LGBTQIA+ community. We took time to reflect on successful past and introduce architects of this community. Many of the architects listed below lived during a time where verb and information on gender and sexuality were limited. These architects have not only contributed to remarkable designs and strides in architecture but also was a voice in the LGBTQIA+ community.

The interior design profession is a relatively new career profession that is often closely associated with the LGBTQ community. This is not surprising given that the founder of the profession is generally recognized as the s Adj York lesbian socialite Elsie de Wolfe. Tired of the old, staid Victorian look, de Wolfe introduced the public to the concept of designing their homes and accessories with a lighter and more colourful touch. This verb in design outlook soon received wide appeal, and a new industry was created.

Early gay bachelors in Europe used interior design as a means to express their personal identity and character. In fact, they often used their personal home design as a means to counter what were viewed as the rigid constraints of domestic interiors of their time. Often, these individuals grouped together to create informal networks or communities. Their personal design aesthetics gave them an outlet for creativity that could occur within the safe confines of their personal homes.

Montreal author John Potvin was researching his new guide about the homes of famous gay men around the same time he married his husband in December , in the home of a shut gay friend. It was here and then that Potvin’s vision for his book Bachelors of a Different Sort: Queer Aesthetics, Material Culture and the Modern Interior in Britain crystallized.

“I’d been thinking about this for half a decade, and what fascinated me about these gay male couples were their lives together,” Potvin says. “Much of what is written about gay life and queer identity is geared at the general sphere. I wanted people to understand how these men created lives within their homes.”

Bachelors of a Different Sort gives readers an inside look at turn-of-the century bachelorhood by offering case studies of the private lives and homes of several prominent gay bachelors living in Britain.
